On the 21st it all starts with the appearances of artists Jack Purcell, Tom Chu, & Eric Battle. Those of you who attended ComiCONN this past May might remember the special ComiCONN variant of Magdalena #1 which was done by Jack, Tom, & Eric, not to mention written by Ron Marz.. I got into the series last summer and a have been waiting anxiously for its return. Needless to say, the series didn't dissappoint. They jumped right into the mix, dealing with the tragic consqequences of last seasons finale and introducing new and terrible villians and character arcs. Annie is enjoying her newfound corporealness, Mitchell is floundering without any new cause to fight for, and George is adjusting to indulging his animal side. If you missed it last summer, and want some new vampire or werewolf fare that doesn't pretty them up, do yourself a favor and check out Being Human on the just released Series 1 DVDs and Blurays.
Reynolds was his usual charming self, even giving his Green Lantern ring to one incredibly lucky-ass fan. The panel also included a trailer that was described to be "jaw dropping". Fans on the convention floor were also treated to what could only be the corpse of ex-Green Lantern, Abin Sur (below).
I have also updated a past DRW post in which I posted a fan made pic of what Ryan Reynolds might look like as a Green Lantern. Thanx to Entertainment Weekly we no longer have to ponder that one, check out the official GL pic...

Marvel Studios as pre-usual did not disappoint at this years San Diego Comic-Con. It all kicked off with the panel for Captain America: The First Avenger. This included an appearance by the cast & most importantly a teaser of Cap which included a brief appearance of Chris Evans in full Cap garb. Fans in attendance were also treated to a scene featuring Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull though he was not sporting the Red Skull mask itself. The following panel was for Thor. It featured almost the entire cast minus Anthony Hopkins as well as the much anticipated Asgardian, Frost Giant, not to mention action packed filled trailer, which according to most reports will silence most of the film’s critics who were not too thrilled with the officially released images of Thor, Odin, & Loki in full costume. Finally, came the not so secret panel for The Avengers panel. It kicked off with a brief teaser which showed The Avenger’s logo while Samuel L Jackson narrated. Jackson them came out to introduce The Avengers cast. While most of the cast was already known Robert Downey Jr then introduced two new cast members, Jeremy Brenner as Hawkeye & Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner aka The Hulk. Couple that with the fact that Joss Whedon will also be directing along with rumors of a new Punisher movie to come being brought up too, this years Comic-Con lived up to all of the hype & more! Jealous much?

They won't be shot in 3D, just overlapped over the original film which saves the studio money which of course also makes them more money off of the ridiculously inflated 3D ticket prices. The one thing fans & moviegoers can almost certainly expect, is a lot of flying hammers & shields which I'm guessing will be the bulk of the use of the 3D. On Saturday the 24th during Comic-Con in San Diego Thor director Kenneth Branagh will try to make his case in defense of his use of 3D. Captain America director Joe Johnston will also appear in San Diego as well. I for one am a skeptical fan who first experienced this "cheap" way of 3D during Tim Burton's reissue into theaters of A Nightmare Before Christmas then of course the more recent debacle Clash of The Titans 3D. I just hope for their sakes the scripts for both movies are the shit. Also, below is the first official Thor image as well as a lo-res image of Jaimie Alexander as Sif.

Starting on July 22nd & ending on the 25th the San Diego Comic-Con will have the undivided attention of comic book fans & movie buffs alike. This 4 day convention has now long been "thee" place to be to promote for the comic industry as well as Hollywood. Well, this years show will be no different. Not to disrespect or downplay the significance of the other days & events but Saturday the 24th is where its at & its all going down in hall H. Whats gong down is this, there will be huge cast appearances from movies such as "Green Lantern", "Captain America", "Thor", & an "Avengers" panel featuring an appearance by Robert Downey Jr & an announcement of a new Hulk casting. There will also be an appearance by the big 3 from "Harry Potter" which are Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, & Rupert Grint (Turned out to to be bull!). This will bet the trios first Comic-Con appearance. The "Green Lantern" panel will feature Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively amongst other cast members while Chris Evans & Chris Hemsworth headline the "Captain America" & "Thor" panels. There are also rumors that Daniel Craig & Harrison Ford will make appearances during the "Paul" & "Cowboys & Aliens" panel which will also feature Seth Rogen & Sigourney Weaver. Kevin Smith will also make his annual Comic-Con appearance on Saturday as well. All in all this could become a day so big in Comic-Con history that it may never be topped.

Alain de Botton was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1969 and now lives in London. He is a writer of essayistic books that have been described as a 'philosophy of everyday life.' He’s written on love, travel, architecture and literature. His books have been bestsellers in 30 countries. Alain also started and helps to run a school in London called The School of Life, dedicated to a new vision of education. Alain’s newest book is published in April 2009 and is titled The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work.

1: In Switzerland where you were born you learned two different languages, French & German. Is this mandatory in all Swiss schools? (In my school you had the option of Spanish & French but they were not mandatory. Sadly, I never learned enough of either.)

Yes, all Swiss - clever and not so clever - know an awful lot of languages, by sheer virtue of their odd geographical position. So I grew up trilingual, like most other people in the country. Strangely, it's given me rather a low opinion of focusing on languages. My sons are growing up with just English.

2: How many languages do you currently speak? How has being bilingual helped you professionally & personally?

I speak three, English, French and German. This has really helped me as writer. It means I can sell my books in France, Switzerland and Germany and connect very directly with readers there.

4: When you were attending Harvard University for your PHD in French philosophy at what point did you decide you would rather be an author?

I realized that I wasn't cut out for the disciplines of academia, because I deeply want to connect with readers and have a noticeable impact on the world.

5: When was the last time you visited the U.S. & how often do you?

I come every few years when I publish a book. Also, my mother lives in DC so I'll go over for family reasons too. I think about the US a lot while not there: it's a country you simply can't ignore if you want to understand modern life.

6: One of the positive reviews of your work which I couldn't agree more with stated that you make literature, philosophy, and art more accessible to a wider audience. Basically, you make it fun. Was this part of the original intentions of your writings when you wrote them, to educate people in a fun & easy going way?

I love clear writing and can't bear to be muddled in what I say. That in turn almost naturally leaves open the possibility that a broad range of people might read my work - which of course, I'm delighted about. Having an impact is the dream of probably every writer. We all want to be heard, and a clear voice definitely helps.

7: One of the negative reviews of your work I came across stated that you tend to state the obvious. What do you say in defense of your work to your critics & do you ever take the negative criticism personal? (Personally, I think that anyone who can make the "obvious" as interesting as you do should be commended & copied.)

It's very hurtful if you spend three years on a book and people say it's nonsense. It's one of the more depressing sides of being a writer. I don't know any writer who is especially unbothered by criticism...

8: At what point in your life did you become so interested in the philosophy of everyday life?

I've always loved to think a lot about what I and people around me feel: sadness, loneliness, elation... these everyday emotions are my bread and butter. No doubt the desire to think so hard about all this is a result of deep neuroses. My deepest ambition is that my children never have any wish to become writers.

9: How was the experience of having your first novel, Essays In Love (which I loved) turned into the movie My Last Five Girlfriends?

I felt gratefully it was turned into a movie, it paid for my car, but I can't help but prefer the way I expressed things in the book itself.

10: In your documentary television special The Consolations of Philosophy you focus on the writings & teachings of Epicurus, Montaigne, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Seneca, & Socrates. Do you have a favorite out of these great minds? Is there a particular teaching or philosophy you tend to favor as well?

I particularly love Nietzsche. I love what he says about pain and difficulty. To sum up: we think life should be easier than it is, and we tend to panic about our panic. So Nietzsche’s line is that we must accept that pain is a necessary stage on the road to anything valuable – be it a flourishing business, a great novel, or a beautiful house. In essence, pain is normal. We should realize that we cannot have both happiness and a pain-free life. Or, as he put it:

What if pleasure and displeasure were so tied together that whoever wanted to have as much as possible of one must also have as much as possible of the other... you have the choice: either as little displeasure as possible, painlessness in brief... or as much displeasure as possible as the price for the growth of an abundance of subtle pleasures and joys that have rarely been relished yet. If you decide for the former and desire to diminish and lower the level of human pain, you also have to diminish and lower the level of their capacity for joy.

For Nietzsche, the most fulfilling human projects appeared inseparable from a degree of torment, the sources of our greatest joys lying awkwardly close to those of our greatest pains.

Examine the lives of the best and most fruitful people and peoples and ask yourselves whether a tree that is supposed to grow to a proud height can dispense with bad weather and storms; whether misfortune and external resistance, some kinds of hatred, jealousy, stubbornness, mistrust, hardness, avarice, and violence do not belong among the favourable conditions without which any great growth even of virtue is scarcely possible.

Why? Because no one is able to produce a great work of art without experience, nor achieve a worldly position immediately, nor be a great business-person at the first attempt; and in the interval between initial failure and subsequent success, in the gap between who we wish one day to be and who we are at present, must come pain, anxiety, envy and humiliation. We suffer because we cannot spontaneously master the ingredients of fulfillment.

Nietzsche was striving to correct the belief that fulfillment must come easily or not at all, a belief ruinous in its effects for it may lead us to withdraw prematurely from challenges that might have been overcome if only we had been prepared for the savagery legitimately demanded by almost everything valuable.

11: How often do you apply these teachings or philosophies to you your own life & everyday activities?

Almost every day - which isn't to say that I am wise (no one is all the time, god forbid!).

12: In your book The Architecture of Happiness you stated that human personality traits are reflected in architecture. When & how did you first come to this conclusion?

My essential argument is that beauty has a huge role to play in altering our mood. When we call a chair or a house beautiful, really what we’re saying is that we like the way of life it’s suggesting to us. It has an attitude we’re attracted to: if it was magically turned into a person, we’d like who it was. It would be convenient if we could remain in much the same mood wherever we happened to be, in a cheap motel or a palace (think of how much money we’d save on redecorating our houses), but unfortunately we’re highly vulnerable to the coded messages that emanate from our surroundings. This helps to explain our passionate feelings towards matters of architecture and home decoration: these things help to decide who we are.

Of course, architecture can’t on its own always make us into contented people. Witness the dissatisfactions that can unfold even in idyllic surroundings. One might say that architecture suggests a mood to us, which we may be too internally troubled to be able to take up. Its effectiveness could be compared to the weather: a fine day can substantially change our state of mind – and people may be willing to make great sacrifices to be nearer a sunny climate. Then again, under the weight of sufficient problems (romantic or professional confusions, for example), no amount of blue sky, and not even the greatest building, will be able to make us smile. Hence the difficulty of trying raise architecture into a political priority: it has none of the unambiguous advantages of clean drinking water or a safe food supply. And yet it remains vital.

13: For one of your last books The Pleasures & Sorrows of Work you chose ten different jobs to research. What about people & their jobs encouraged you to write this book?

In the course of writing my book, one of the more consoling ideas I discovered was just how rare and historically ambitious is the modern idea that our work should deliver happiness to us on a daily basis. The strangest thing about the world of work isn't the long hours we put in or the fancy machines we use to get it done; the most extraordinary aspect of the work scene is in the end psychological rather than economic or industrial. It has to do with our attitudes to work, more specifically the widespread expectation that our work should make us happy, that it should be at the center of our lives and our expectations of fulfillment. The first question we tend to ask of new acquaintances is not where they come from or who their parents were, but what they do - presuming thereby to discover the core of their identity.

When work is not going well, it's useful to remember that our identities stretch beyond what is on the business card, that we were people long before we became workers – and will continue to be human once we have put our tools down forever. As an entirely secular person, I'm struck by St Augustine's injunction that it is a sin to judge a man by his status or position in society. In other words, when work is not going well, we need to remember to distinguish our sense of worth from the work we do.

14: A few months after The Pleasures & Sorrows of Work was published you answered an ad to take a position at Heathrow Airport for a week to basically just watch people as they come & go. How was this experience & what about it drew you take the assignment? (This experience resulted in the Alain's book A Week At The Airport)

(Alain De Botton at Heathrow Airport)

It was a fascinating assignment. The real problem with airports is that we tend to go there when we need to catch a plane - and because it's so difficult to find the way to the gate, we tend not to look around at our surroundings. And yet airports definitely reward a second look - they are the imaginative centers of the modern world. It's here you should go to find, in a concrete form, all the themes of modernity that one otherwise finds only in an abstract forms in the media. Here you see globalization, environmental destruction, runaway consumerism, family breakdown, the modern sublime etc. in action.

I've long been fascinated by a kind of literature that can describe the modern world, in its complexity and its detail. I fell in love with Norman Mailer's Of a Fire on the Moon, a description of the 1969 moon landing and was inspired by him to begin a kind of anthropology of modern life.

15: When you came up with the idea of creating The School of Life were you encouraged to open this school due to experiences you did or didn't have? What are the major differences between The School of Life & other schools?

One of the paradoxes of modern consumer society is that while you can find thousands of stylish businesses that will sell you the perfect coffee or jumper, disappointingly few enterprises are interested in serving up anything that could benefit your mind. A Londoner keen to take in some ideas in an attractive and lively setting has a serious shortage of options to hand. Most education open to the general public takes place in gloomy lino-floored institutions, under the auspices of people who remind us of why academic is also a synonym for remote and boring, and why we were once probably quite glad to quit school or college.

That's why I helped to start the school. The School of Life has a passionate belief in making learning relevant – and so runs courses in the important questions of everyday life. Whereas most colleges and universities chop up learning into abstract categories (‘agrarian history’ ‘the 18th century English novel’), The School of Life titles its courses according to things we all tend to care about: careers, relationships, politics, travels, families. An evening or weekend on one of its courses is likely to be spent reflecting on such matters as your moral responsibilities to an ex partner or how to resolve a career crisis. The School also has a division offering psychotherapy for individuals, couples or families – and it does so in a completely stigma-free way. For the normally reserved British, it must be a first to have an institution that offers therapy from an ordinary high street location and moreover, treats the idea of having therapy as no more or less strange than having a haircut or pedicure, and perhaps a good deal more useful.

In a culture where anyone who attempts a serious conversation is at once accused of belonging to the ‘chattering classes’ and where anything too intellectual is in danger of being called pretentious, one has to applaud a place that attempts to put learning and ideas back to where they should always have been – right in the middle of our lives.

16: I have also red that you were considering opening up more Schools of Life abroad in places such as New York & Australia, are you still considering them or are you still in "watch & see" phase? (I for one would be first in line to sign up in New York as I live in Connecticut.)

Definitely watch and see, we're still tweaking the business model.

17: During the documentary The Consolations of Philosophy during Schopenhauer on Love you met a woman who had been dumped by her boyfriend after four years of dating in a not so polite way. At the end of that of the show you asked the woman out to dinner, did she say yes & if so how did it go? Do you still keep in touch with the woman?

She did say yes, we dated for a year or so, but are sadly no longer in touch.

18: I read in an interview about how you met your wife in where during a night out with friends you were asked to describe your ideal woman or girlfriend to be. I believe you stated that she had to be a doctor's daughter who grew up outside London and worked in the business or science field. Someone there took note of what you said then later introduced you to your now wife Charlotte. Were you as shocked as I was reading about it that there was someone out there that almost seemed tailor-made for you? How long after meeting her did you decide that she was in fact the woman you had described as ideal for you?

The feeling was pretty immediate. I knew right away and haven't been proved wrong. She's a very tolerant, intelligent, strong woman - and a great mother too.

19: Since DeathRayWeekly.com is a mostly comic book orientated website I'd be remiss if I didn't ask you one or two comic book questions. Have you ever been or are you currently into reading comics? If you could have any super power (e.g. super strength or telepathy) what would it be & why?

I really loved Asterix as a child - and am just rediscovering them with my son. Tintin was another favorite. As for a super power, I'd love to be able to go back in time - so as to correct all my mistakes and get ahead of the game.

20: Do you have any upcoming projects or appearances that you would like to promote?

I've just helped to launch a new organization called Living Architecture, an organization which has asked a series of established and emerging world-class architects to build houses around the UK. The houses will be available to rent for holidays by the general public. The inspiration for Living Architecture came from a desire for people to be able to experience what it is like to live, eat and sleep in a space designed by an outstanding architectural practice. Whilst there are examples of great modern buildings in Britain, they tend to be in places that one passes through (eg. airports, museums, offices), and the few modern houses that exist are almost all in private hands and cannot be visited. Living Architecture will start to open its houses for holiday rentals in the summer of 2010.
