DAYBREAKERS: First Thoughts
A world full of the undead, where humans are a dying breed, and vampires, starving for blood, are begining to regress into savage beasts. A beautiful picture, am I right? So is this a social commentary on research management? a good old fashion vampire flick? or just one more knock off of "I am Legend"? The answer is D, none of the above. While the movie manages to touch on all those, it doesn't stay on any of them nearly long enough to make it a major part of it, although Hawke's Edward Dalton does remind me a lot of Vincent Price in "The Last Man on Earth." That's probably my major problem with the movie, it seemed unfocused. There were a lot of intertwining plots that never felt developed enough. Where does it make up for it? 1.) Interesting Concept: We've scene worlds in the throes of a vampire apocalypse onscreen before, but they never have been a functioning, if declining, society. Kudos to you for that. The cities, the billboards, the lights... hell even the Hill Valley-esque housing development. Spot on I say. 2.) Gratuitous Violence: That's right. Good ol' fashioned gore. Blood. Vampires. Explosions. Exploding Blood. Exploding Vampires. A can't miss formula. If you liked the last sentence, I would definitely check the movie out. If just to see one of the best applications of a domino effect in cinematic history. You'll see what I mean
