New & Old Avengers Bring You "The Heroic Age"

Over the past week or so Marvel has been revealing clues as to what the "new look" Avengers roster will look like. Announcing that all Avengers titles (in which there are 4) will be canceled before Avengers #1 hit stands in May, they've slowly been releasing clues of possible roster members leading up to this weeks official roster picks.  So far its been in this order: Bucky as Cap, Spider-Woman, Iron Man, Clint Barton rockin the "H" as Hawkeye again, & just released today, Thor. This "ad campaign" if you wanna call it that, kicked off with The Heroic Age teaser pic. Though many first thought that this could be a peak at the final roster, this weeks offical roster releases tells another story (I.E. Spider-Woman). These anouncements also beg the question, wheres Steve Rogers? I can understand that he needs time to wrap his head around things considering the events in Captain America: Reborn but you'd think a roster starring Iron Man, Thor & Hawkeye would be perfect for Steve to rejoin the team. Maybe theres still beef bewteen Tony & Steve? Maybe hes heading up another Avengers team, who knows? Its been seven years of dark-ass times for the Marvel U. This Heroic Age seems to hint towards a happier more positive time. It would seem to be the perfect platform for Steve Rogers to lead the heroes of Marvel into this new age. Like I said he deserves some R&R but like Batman says crime doesn't take breaks, neither should heroes whether you're freshly resurected or not.

Interview With A Newb - Batman and Robin by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely

Welcome back to another thrilling installment of Interview With A Newb, a recurring column in which I give some comics to somebody who knows nothing at all about them and see what they think.

This time the newb is Jennifer who I met through NaNoWriMo last year. The only exposure to comics she has is knowing her dad had a few old Batman comics in their basement.

I decided to go with a brand new #1 comic, 'Batman and Robin' by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely. In an interview with IGN Morrison said, 'Batman and Robin' welcomes new readers!" I gave her the first three issues to read so she could get the whole first story arc. Before reading I simply repeated what Grant Morrison had said in interviews leading up to the release of the book: Bruce Wayne is dead and now Dick Grayson, the original Robin, is now Batman and Damian, Batman's evil son, is now Robin.

She got through the issues all right. I had to point out a few places where it wasn't apparent right away that it was a double page spread. Jen also asked about Professor Pyg when he showed up at the end of the first issue because she thought she was supposed to know who he was until I told her that was his first appearance.

Those of you who have been following Grant Morrison on Batman these past few years know that what I said was probably both true and false. This was his first appearance for real while he showed up dead and crucified in Batman #666 when Damian was grown up and Batman in the future.

Overall she really enjoyed the first arc of 'Batman and Robin.' She did ask why Robin was evil and I said he isn't so much evil as he's an aristocratic dick raised by the League of Assassins which led to some quick explanations about Ra's al Ghul and Talia.

Then there was trying to explain what happened to Bruce. Trying to sum up everything that happened in both 'RIP' with Dr. Hurt and the Black Glove and how he was really alive after only becoming unstuck in time after being hit by the God of Evil's Omega Beam in 'Final Crisis' was pretty tough. Jen didn't know that all the characters from the DC Universe are all part of a shared continuity so that Superman and Batman teaming up is a common thing. So I guess the only confusing part for her was trying to explain what happened before Dick took the cowl and from what I've read on Internet that wasn't unusual even for people who read comics.

So will Jen start reading comics and become a fan like me? For the moment it doesn't seem likely even though she enjoyed reading these. After all, how could you possibly concentrate on anything new now that Lost has started up again? But she did like it and would probably read more if I lent them to her.

KICKin ASS & McLovin It!

If you haven't seen the trailers for the comic based movie Kick-Ass yet then you should instantly kick your own ass. Having read the comics which its based off of I am more than curious to see if this movie will go down the suprisingly dark path the first 8 books did. I just read issue # 8 which just came out about a week ago. The story is bloody, dark, & heading in a direction I more than approve of. Mark Millar has set the table for a realistic gorefeset which has to open the eyes of any of you wannabe Heroes out there. It reminds me of Schwarzenegger in The Last Action Hero when he punches out a car window only to find out that in reality that shit HURTS! The trailers for the movie seem to portray a slapsticky action movie that might end up being cute. Featuring Nicholas Cage along with "McLovin" (Christopher Mintz-Plasse ) would also suggest this could get silly. If it stays the dark course people might be a little turned off but true fans should enjoy what Millar has concieved down to the last drops of blood & tears.

BJ's Opinion of This Whole Late Night "Thing"

So for all ( or none) of you who follow me on the Twitter you already know that as far as I'm concerned I prefer watching Craig Ferguson over any other late night show. A lot of that has to do with it coming on when I'm usually off to bed but I mostly just think he's hilarious. Usually with any late night talk show that I might end up watching (except Leno, I've never liked him) I always turn it off once the guests show up but not with Craig Ferguson. His interview with Morgan Freeman from a few weeks back kept me up because I was laughing so hard.

Now none of this is to say that I don't like Conan (which I do), Kimmel or Letterman but I like Craig Ferguson best.

Moving on to what Conan will do next is another story. Chris says that ConanonFox.com has already been bought and redirects to a Twitter feed but I think he can do better.

Now that he's walking away from the Tonight Show with more than $40 million I think he should try something new: Internet Television. He's got enough money to get a pretty slick website made and I think a series of web shorts by O'Brien and Andy Richter would give me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

But why not Fox? That isn't even a question to consider. Have we learned nothing from Firefly, Arrested Development, Drive, Dollhouse and many more? I know that those are different kinds of shows but geek anger runs deep.

Anyway, part of the reason Conan's ratings weren't up there was because this new generation of people who would watch it instead went to Hulu the next day to watch either the best clips from the previous night or the whole show.

So I'm really hoping for ConanTV.com (or something more clever and less obvious than that). I would gladly watch Conan doing nothing but monologues and sketches with no celebrity interviews in sight.
